Our taco seasoning is an excellent time saving addition to any kitchen where time is of the essence – just add it to your chicken, beef or ground turkey and you can create a ton of flavor.
The taco that we’re all probably most familiar with is a Mexican dish made with a wheat or sometimes corn tortilla that is rolled or folded around a filling. The taco filling can be from a variety of fillings, including beef, chicken, fish, pork or vegetables. A taco is typically eaten with your hands (not a fork and knife) and is usually accompanied by some combination of avocado, black beans, cheese, cilantro, guacamole, lettuce, onions, salsa and tomatoes.
Taco historians (yes there are actually professors who have done extensive research on tacos) believe that Mexican silver miners likely invented the taco. The first written references describing tacos occurred toward the end of the 19th century. One of the first tacos described was called “tacos de minero” which translates to miner’s tacos.
It is also agreed that while the taco originated in Mexico it was Mexican Americans living in the Southwestern US that reinvented it. The first newspaper mention of tacos in the US was in 1905 and at that time immigrants from Mexico were arriving to help build the railroads and work in the mines. At first most Americans considered Mexican food to be a lower class street food. As second generation Mexican Americans began to advance economically more businesses started to pay attention to this growing segment. Most tacos in this country became fusion food between Mexican food and various available local ingredients.
Mexico also went through their own immigration phase as Lebanese immigrants moved into Mexico and brought with them their love of shawarma which is almost like a Middle Eastern taco where the meat of choice was lamb and instead of a tortilla they used pita bread. As they created their own fusion tacos of lamb on tortillas these were called “tacos arabes” or Arab tacos. Second generation Lebanese Mexicans also adapted their love of tacos to include pork meat filling in place of the lamb and adding some pineapple, chiles and spices and these became quite popular and are called Tacos al pastor.
As Americans have started craving more authentic Mexican cuisine regional Mexican tacos like tacos de barbacoa and tacos al pastor have become increasingly popular in this country as well.
Our hand blended taco seasoning is more like a first step for those that aren’t quite as adventurous. While this seasoning is a basic taco seasoning it is not a bland tasteless seasoning blend at all.
For a quick taco recipe – brown your meat (your choice of beef, chicken or ground turkey) add 4 tablespoons of taco seasoning mix and 8 oz. of water for each one pound of meat. Turn down your skillet to simmer, cover and let stand for 10 minutes (stirring occasionally) or until the mixture starts to thicken up. You can also add taco seasoning to bean dishes, fajitas, Taco Casserole, homemade tortilla chips dip (a wonderful substitute for the standard chips and salsa) and sprinkle on Mexican salad, nachos, chili, scrambled eggs and soups.
