Genmaicha Green Tea - Certified Organic

Ingredients: Organic Green tea, Organic toasted brown rice

Pronounced “gen-my-tcha”, Genmaicha translates to “dark rice tea” and is also known as “popcorn tea”, “rice tea” or “the people’s tea”. This is our classic Japanese Genmaicha green tea that is blended with toasted rice. It is sometimes referred to as "popcorn tea" because during the roasting process a few grains of the rice pop to resemble popcorn.

Most teas (especially Chinese teas) tend have a great story depicting their historical roots. We believe that knowing a teas history helps deepen your appreciation of that tea. This tea was created due to teas growing popularity in Japan, but at that time tea was more of an expensive luxury that only the most affluent could regularly enjoy. Genmaicha was invented in the early 1900’s by a small innovative tea shop owner in Kyoto, Japan. By cutting the tea with rice it allowed the average Japanese to afford this tea and this is how it became known as “the people’s tea”. It also has a reputation as being a good fasting tea.

Serious tea loves worldwide would avoid this lesser quality tea and Genmaicha’s reputation of being a cheap tea stuck until more recently. Historically it was typically made with low grade tea leaves from the late harvest (bancha) and the rice was added to cover up any off-flavors. More recently better quality Genmaicha teas have made it to the market. This higher quality Genmaicha tea replaced the poorer quality bancha leaves with the superior sencha leaves. Our Genmaicha tea is made using the higher quality sencha leaves. This type of Genmaicha is now in vogue among the urban Japanese elite. It is believed to cleanse the palate and enhance the flavor of fine food.

GenmaichaTea steeped from sencha tea leaves has a light brownish yellow hue. The flavor is mild and the fresh, grassy character of the green tea is balanced with the toasted, nutty barley-like flavor of the rice. This tea is naturally sweet with an almost chewy finish that is refreshing.

Use 1 slightly heaping teaspoon per 7-9 oz of water. Begin with good tasting water. We use water that is between 180° to 190° F. Other sources recommend using water at a boiling temperature. This is unusually high for a green tea but the belief is that this hot water is needed to enhance the toasty flavor of the rice. We’ve tried both and have found that it will really depend on your individual preferences. The rice flavor did appear to be more pronounced at the higher temperature but if you want a subtler flavor go with the lower steeping temperature.

You should also experiment with steeping time as well as some sources believe that as little as 30 seconds is enough while others recommend steeping for 3 to 7 minutes.

It is not recommended that you add sugar or milk to this green tea.

Caffeine level is low.

1 oz of tea produces approximately 12 cups.

All of our tea bags are made with unbleached tea filter paper. They are approximately 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" and have no strings or tags.
