From the species Capsicum chinense, the habanero is one of the hotter chile peppers that you can find that still has some noticeable flavor characteristics. If you just want burn your face off heat, then your search will lead to either the Bhut Jolokia (a.k.a Ghost Chile) or the Carolina Reaper.
The Capsicum chinense species was incorrectly identified as "Chinese" in 1776 by a Dutch physician who was collecting plants throughout the Caribbean for Emperor Francis I. The name stuck and this “Chinese hot pepper” is not indigenous to China, but is native to the Caribbean and/ or South America. One domesticated Habanero was found at a dig in Peru and was dated at 8,500 years old
In the English language, habanero has often been used to identify the entire chinense species. This, of course, is not accurate, as there have been dozens of different pod types identified within this species. Another popular chile of the same Capsicum chinense species, the Scotch bonnet, is commonly referred as a type of "habanero." That would also be incorrect, as the habanero and Scotch bonnet are different pod types.
There is some debate as to where the Habanero is indigenous to – some chile pepper experts believe that they hail from the Amazon region of South America and others believe they are from the Yucatan Peninsula which includes 3 Mexican states and parts of Belize and Guatemala.
Today, the Yucatan region is the leading producer of Habanero chile peppers but these are also grown to a lesser extent in California, Texas and Costa Rica. The average size of a Habanero is 1” -2 ½” and 1”-2” in diameter and they come in a wide range of colors –red, pink, orange, white and chocolate – depending on the variety. The Habanero chile comes in at 150,000-325,000 SHU (Scoville Heat Units)! In addition to our easy to use Habanero flakes, we also carry Dried Habanero Chiles and a pure Habanero powder.
There are several fairly common types of habanero chiles. Orange is porbably the most common in this country and from time to time we're able to get our hands on hotter habaneros like the Red Savina Habanero and the Chocolate Habanero. Our habanero flakes are of the orange variety.
Habaneros are ideal in homemade salsas, wings and barbeque sauce.
The flavor profile of the habanero has the noticeable tropical fruit flavors of coconut and papaya, with berry undertones, and an acidic and intense, fiery heat.
