There does not appear to be anyone who has been able to remain just a casual fan of Sriracha sauce. The legion of fans of this spicy hot sauce are quite passionate and not shy about sharing their obsession for it. For those that may have been living off the grid for the last several years, Sriracha is a Thai condiment that may be best described as an offbeat, spicier version of ketchup. While it was originally used in Southeastern Asian cuisines, it has become wildly popular in this country and has replaced chipotle chiles as our favorite new spicy flavor.
Sriracha powder will open up a world of additional possible uses where a powdered version works better than the liquid does. We know that a few of our hardcore barbecue guys are going to love this stuff!
While Sriracha Sauce is the current darling of the culinary world it also has a great story to back up the brand. David Tran, the founder and CEO of Huy Fong Foods immigrated from Vietnam to Los Angeles in the early 80’s. While he was settling into his new country he was unable to find a spicy sauce that was similar to what he would use on a daily basis back home. This accidental entrepreneur soon found that L.A.’s growing Southeast Asian community was also experiencing a similar hot sauce withdrawal.
Shortly after making this discovery he concocted his first version of Sriracha. This hot Thai sauce is made with hybrid red jalapeño peppers, vinegar, sugar, salt, and garlic. He was soon delivering it to local Asian markets throughout the city. The sauce quickly became a local favorite (and not just in the Asian markets) and the company has experienced double digit growth every year without ever spending a penny on advertising. Sriracha evangelists have helped spread its popularity across the country strictly through word of mouth advertising.
The use of Sriracha powder will only be limited by your imagination. We’ve already used this in several spice rubs, sprinkled it on popcorn, sweet potato fries, scrambled eggs, grilled vegetables, hamburgers and roasted chicken. It would also work well in breading for fried chicken or onion rings. Homemade chips also seem to be a natural.
We’ve heard of people using it on the rim of a glass for bloody marys, making spiced nuts and we’re intrigued by those that use it as a balance to sweets such as on ice cream and fruit.
