Earl Grey Tea......Decaffeinated - Certified Organic

All the glorious presence of Earl Grey tea, but without the caffeine boost!

Using a chemical-free decaffeination process, this tea mixes Broken Orange Pekoe (BOP) with the delicate indigo threads of cornflower blossoms. Once in the cup, this tea explodes with fragrance as citrusy bergamot fills the air with a promise of sweetness in a strong cup of black tea! Delight in this decaffeinated version of a fantastic classic tea!

Traditionally Earl Grey Tea has been a blend of Chinese and Indian teas with a memorable citrus aroma and flavor derived from the addition of oil extracted from the aromatic bergamot orange rinds.

For our Earl Grey Tea we use teas sourced from the 3 preeminent growing regions of Sri Lanka – Dimbula, Nuwara Eliya and Nuwara Uva. These three high-grown districts produce flavorful teas that have the signature “Ceylon‟ tea character which is recognized by its floral aroma and flavor, bright coppery color and mild astringency. The teas from these three regions provide an ideal base for our flavored teas.

Tea from Dimbula and the western estates of Nuwara Eliya achieve their quality peak during the January and February time period (depending on that year’s growing conditions), while teas grown in Uva and the eastern estates of Nuwara Eliya hit their optimum flavor during July and August (depending on growing conditions). These multiple peak periods allow us the opportunity to have tea plucked twice a year for our flavored tea blends which ensures optimal freshness and flavor.

We use flavoring oils (not lesser quality crystals) of bergamot oranges. Bergamot oranges, Citrus bergamia (a subspecies of bitter orange), is commercially grown in a small area in southern Italy, where more than 80% of world’s commercial supply of bergamot oranges are grown. Bergamot orange is a fragrant fruit with a yellow color and looks comparable to a lemon but is about the size of an medium orange. The fruit is not grown for its juice consumption as it’s not generally considered to be a flavorful fruit but instead is sought after for the skin's fragrant oils.

We only use top quality natural flavors in our Earl Grey Tea. A top quality Earl Grey has a enchanting taste and the natural flavors don’t cover up the authentic taste of the high grown Ceylon tea. Lesser quality Earl Grey Teas are loaded with overwhelming artificial flavors, which are often used to disguise a lower quality tea.

Top quality natural flavors on the other hand, will not leave an aftertaste which allows more of the teas true character to come through. Natural flavors have a tendency to be slightly muted and are meant to enhance the Ceylon tea and not over flavor it. Earl Grey aficionados prefer this and it’s one of the leading attributes of a top grade Earl Grey.

One of the great things about tea is the legends that surround so many of them and Earl Grey Tea has several versions. The first version appears to be more urban legend while the second version appears more logical. The urban legend anecdote describes how a British diplomat, stationed in China, rescued a Mandarin. To show their gratefulness, the diplomat received from the Chinese the recipe for this flavored tea. When he returned to England, the diplomat presented the tea to Charles Earl Grey who at that time was the Prime Minister (1830-1834).

This “legend” is quickly dispelled as the Chinese have never really been known to drink much black tea (they tend to prefer green tea) and the scenting of tea with bergamot oil was unknown to them at that time. This makes it highly improbable that they had a “recipe” for an Earl Grey like tea to share with honored foreign guests.

The tale that appears to be more factual was that the tea was specially blended for Lord Grey by a local Chinese mandarin, to accommodate the local water that was high in lime at Howick Hall, the family’s residence in Northumberland (located in the northeastern part of the United Kingdom). Lady Grey shared this tea with many of the political visitors that came calling to the residence and it became so popular that it was made available for others to purchase it. Twinings became Great Britain’s first supplier of this tea.

Earl Grey tea is used as a flavoring for many types of cakes and chocolates as well as for savory sauces. For sweet recipes, it is added as a loose tea to hot cream or melted butter and once the flavor is infused the loose leaves are strained and removed.

Earl Grey Tea pairs well with buttery flavored pastries, Crème Brûlée, citrus fruit tarts, dark chocolate, eggs Benedict and strong fish dishes.

Earl Grey Tea is slightly dry to the nose with a fresh and zesty citrus aroma with a delicate and nuanced orange flavor that is perfectly balanced with the tang of the Ceylon tea base.

We like to enjoy Earl Grey on its own or with a slice of lemon.

The color infusion of this tea is a bright and coppery.

Steep at 212° F for 3-7 minutes. You can certainly steep a bit longer for a stronger tea or a bit less for a milder tea.

Caffeine level is medium.

1 ounce makes approximately 12 cups of tea.

All of our tea bags are made with unbleached tea filter paper. They are approximately 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" and have no strings or tags.

Tea was reportedly discovered in China around 2737 B.C. by The Emperor Chen Nung when a tea leaf fell into his bowl of hot water. This tradition of tea drinking became an integral part of society and was the preferred beverage for all walks of life; from monks and mandarins to the nomadic tribesmen who traded horses for bricks of tea. The Japanese may have transformed tea drinking into a sacred ceremony; however, the Chinese are credited with initiating the time honored ritual of offering a guest a cup of tea as a sign of hospitality.

Scented teas have been around for a long time and are produced according to ancestral recipes. Before the advent of essential oil extracts one of the easiest scents to duplicate was ‘Rose’. The plantations would literally cut the rose blossoms from the plants bordering fields and pathways and sprinkle these into the tea. The result was a delicate but finely flavored tea. Today the practice remains virtually the same, but essential oils are used to speed up the scenting process and freshly cut flowers are added to the tea for visual effects. The result is a delightfully attractive leaf accented with rose petals combined with the refreshing cleansing flavor of roses. The next time a guest drops by, why not offer a truly special cup of hospitality accented with the scent and petals of roses.

Brewing Information:

Hot tea brewing method: Bring freshly drawn cold water to a rolling boil. Place 1 teaspoon of tea for each cup into the teapot. Pour the boiling water into the teapot. Cover and let steep for 3-7 minutes according to taste (the longer the steeping time the stronger the tea). We recommend adding milk and sugar (if this is to your taste), but if you prefer your tea ‘straight-up’ it is equally acceptable and enjoyable.

Iced tea brewing method: (to make 1 liter/quart): Place 5 teaspoons of tea into a teapot or heat resistant pitcher. Pour 1 1/4 cups of freshly boiled water over the tea. Steep for 5 minutes. Quarter fill a serving pitcher with cold water. Pour the tea into your serving pitcher straining the leaves. Add ice and top up the pitcher with cold water. Garnish and sweeten to taste. [A rule of thumb when preparing fresh brewed iced tea is to double the strength of hot tea since it will be poured over ice and diluted with cold water]
